You don’t always have to spend a lot of dough to go on a vacation. I recently went on an island hopping trip to Coron. The following are the things I did in the span of two (2) days. I understand that some of these things would vary but I’m writing this based on what I’ve experienced. (Note: These doesn’t include the plane tickets)
Day One:
•Busuanga to Coron Transfer. (Fare: 150php)
•Check in at Coron Reef. Coron Reef is just a stone’s throw away from the town center. After we settled in we got ready for breakfast, for just 100php each you would be served hotdogs, eggs,
danggit and rice plus coffee for a sumptuous breakfast. (Room: 600php, Breakfast: 100php)
•Visit the Market. After a brief rest we then went to the market to look for things to buy which we plan to have it cook for our lunch. We settled with a kilo of Soran which is just 60php a kilo and crabs which is 180php a kilo. The type of fish that can be found at the market depends on the season that you go there. We then proceeded back to Coron Reef to have it cooked for a price of 150php. (Cooking Fee: 150php, Food depends on your budget)
•Maquinit Hot Springs. I know you’ll feel tired after the travel from Manila to Coron. So it’s one way to relax and take a dip at Coron’s hot spring. The ideal time to go is at 4pm after and they close at 10pm. You could either take a van or a tricycle to go there. We opt for the tricycle which for the going price of 300php the driver would wait for you until you finish. It is imperative that he should wait coz transportation there is difficult. When you get there you would pay an entrance of 100php, believe me it’s worth the entrance fee. (Fare: 300php, Entrance Fee: 100php)
•Climb Mt. Tapyas. If you still have the energy and up for the challenge climbing Mt. Tapyas’ almost 724 steps should be on your list. I admit I had a difficult time it took us almost an hour to get to the top. The ideal time to go is before sunset. The view from above is exhilarating. You could see my pics from the top if you don’t believe me. (Free)
•Eat Dinner. There are a lot of restos in Coron but I shall only recommend the places where I like to eat and hang out. First is Coron Bistro, quality and quantity. It is a bit pricey but worth is and don’t forget to try their steak. La Sirenetta, idyllic place to hang out and have a quiet dinner. It’s owned by Maika, a Survivor contestant they say. The good thing there is it’s just at the back of Coron Reef and the billiards is free. Kawayanan Grill, I can only say that the food is pricey and the quantity is so little. It’s ideal to be a watering hole not for dinner. Lolo Nonoy’s, it’s more of a “turo-turo”, this is a place for the budget conscious. (Depends on your choice)
Day Two:
We spend the whole day hopping from one island to another. Coron Reef has their boats so you don’t have to go anywhere to arrange one. All you have to do is inform them. Bring a lot of bread if you like feeding the fishes. I’ll just write down every place we’ve been to and to leave some mystery I won’t describe it.
1. Siete Pecados Marine Park 100php/each
2. Twin Lagoon 100php/each
3. CYC Free
4. Banol Beach 100php/each
5. Skeleton Wreck 100php/each
6. Barracuda Lake 100php/each
7. Kayangan Lake 200php/each
8. Maquinit Hot Springs 100php/each
Note: the Boatride: 1500php good for 6 and 2500php for 6 or more, Snorkel Rental: 100php
(Boatride: 1500php, Fees: 800php, Snorkel Rent: 100php)
After landfall at around 7pm we were tired and spent but it was worth it. We just knock some cold ones at Kawayanan and had a quiet dinner at Coron Bistro then we call it a night.
TOTAL COST OF VACATION: 3900PHP

Coron Island Hopping Part One
I am writing this blog a day after we went island hopping in Coron. Last January 15, 2010 my girlfriend visited me here in Busuanga. I also took a brief rest from work so that we could spend quality time together. Our first stop the moment she got out of the terminal is to go to the nearby YKR waterfall which is just 10 minutes from the tower. The water was really gold but it is nice to take a dip in the falls since it’s a hot summer day. After about an hour of swimming and picture taking we decided to go back to the tower to wash up.
We then proceeded to Coron town to spend the night there. We spend the whole duration of our stay at Coron Reef ( for inquiries contact Ate Lani at 09294649791) the nightly rates start from 600 to 1000 for a good for five room. It would also be easier to arrange for the boat ride since Coron Reef has a number of boats for island hopping. We just took a quick stroll in town and decided to climb Mt. Tapyas along with Jojo, one of our APT at the airport. There are almost 724 steps up to the peak where the cross is located. It was a struggle to climb since I smoke and is out of shape. But I have to admit that the view from the top is breathtaking. You could see the whole Coron and the islands around it.
When dinner came, we decided to eat at La Sirenetta it is located at the back of Coron Reef and another fact why Anabelle want to eat there is to have her picture taken with the Survivor candidate Mika. The food is good but it is quite expensive but you could play all the billiards that you want for free and the place is good for relaxing.
The next day we just had breakfast at Coron Reef while waiting for Phoebe to arrive. If you are in Coron Reef you should try their breakfast which of hotdogs, eggs and danggit plus fried rice in a platter. It is only 100 per person and breakfast wouldn’t get more sumptuous than that. After Phoebe has settled down we went to the market to buy fish and crabs which the two are craving. We brought them back to the hotel to ask Ate Lani to cook them for just a fee of 150 pesos for the cooking. After lunch, we went to Mabentangin Dam and Maquinit Hot Springs. I wouldn’t recommend Mabentangin but I would surely recommend the hot springs. If you want to go to Maquinit Hot Springs, you could either take a tricycle or rent a van. The ideal time to go is at 5pm. If you decide to take d tricycle, the rate is just 300 pesos more than that and the tricycle is trying to milk you. The tricycle would wait for you till you finish or your agreed time.
We spend like 3 hours taking a dip at the hot springs. We just traded stories and Phoebe kept taking pictures of us. It was an ideal way to end the day. When we got back to Coron we met up with my officemates and we had dinner at Lolo Nonoy’s for some home-cooked meal then we proceeded to La Sirenetta for rounds and rounds of billiards and beers.

Another Christmas and New Year Away from Home
I have been here in Busuanga for more than a month. So far it has been all good but one can't help to be lonely sometimes especially at night when there's no electricity. right now as i am writing this blog we only have power during nighttime and during the day we utilize generator power. I'm able to write my blog again since Emman bought a unltd smartbro. It means that i'm able to log in anytime.
I spend the last christmas and new year here in the island paradise of Busuanga. i think its been five years that i spend either christmas or new year away from iloilo. we spend the christmas in Coron. We just had a modest dinner and went to the plaza for a stroll after dinner. The town plaza was full of lights and there is a huge christmas tree in the center. We then proceeded to Kawayanan grill and wait for the clock to strike 12am there. We had beer and peanuts as our noche buena. I spend xmas with Sir Pat, mario, emman and rex along with our guest Tonet and Daniel Pugeda, they're a couple who missed their flight due to a series of unfortunate events.
We were preparing to go to Coron already and the last flight has already took off for Manila when Tonet and Danny showed up at the tower asking if there is another flight coming out of Busuanga. There they told us about their experience that they got stranded in Waling Waling resort when there boat broke down, When they got to Coron they hired a motorcycle to bring them to the airport but they weren't able to get far when the motorcycle bust a tire. Then they hired a van to take them but they have to wait again for 15 min when the van also broke down. So, instead of them staying at the tower and since we were going to Coron. We took them with us and helped them find a place to stay where we always stay also when we are stranded in Coron. The place is called Coron Reef and you could contact their caretaker Ate Lani (09294649791) for reservations. They also accept reservations for island hopping tours. We went ahead for dinner but they also joined us in Kawayanan to wait for the christmas.
It was not a grand noche buena but what is important is the spirit is there. it is nice to spend christmas and new year at home but i guess i'm one of the few that spends xmas away and i think i spend my xmas in a different place everytime.
I spend my new year the same way i spent my xmas. The only difference is that we stayed here at the airport and didnt went down to Coron. We didnt have anything to cook so we just raided Maricel, Ate Nening's and Ate Eden's houses for the New Year. Emman, Marlon, Jojo and I are the ones left here. the only thing we used to welcome the new year is the siren on top of the tower. It was more than enough to drive away bad spirits if there is one here.
As year 2009 ends and 2010 begins, so is our life here in Busuanga. There would be more time to lounge around than work but when it comes to work we only have one thing in mind. your safety.. have a happy new year from the ATCs of Busuanga

Basketball in Busuanga Dec 3,2009
It has been almost a week since I posted my last blog. Due to the difficulty of getting a signal for my Globe Tattoo I defer posting my blog entry since I can’t also go to Coron to access the internet. I should get a SmartBro dongle so that I could stay connected again. My Mafia Wars and Yakuza Lords are suffering defeats since I can’t move them everyday.
Work yesterday was the same routinary work. You talk to the pilot and Manila Radio and at the same time I was playing Black Hawk Down on my laptop. I also got to talk to the pilot of RPC 1359 or the Eye in the Sky. Since 1359 has an incident while he was the pilot and I was the alpha controller when I was at Manila Tower. The story is he lost his radio while about to land in Runway 13 in Manila. I still have a traffic at that time and I gave him a light gun signal of Steady Red, which means give way to other aircraft and continue circling. Eye in the sky didn’t do any of those, he continued his approach which force me to clear the aircraft lined up on the runway for immediate take off. After the aircraft touchdown he has regained radio contact with Manila Ground and in turn gives me the chance to let a PAL Airbus line up on runway 31 for take-off. (Note: Runway 31 is the opposite end of Runway 13.) I scanned my horizon, which is standard and the most basic rule as a Tower Controller. I noticed that while the PAL Airbus is rolling the Cessna, which is the type of aircraft of Eye in the Sky was also crossing the opposite end of the runway. The pilot told me when we were talking yesterday that he didn’t see the Airbus lined up on the other end. Atleast its good that we were able to talk to that I may be able to hear his side. Regardless of that you still owe me Christian.
After work yesterday we were informed that we would have a basketball game in the barangay league where we joined out of fun. We were laughing since none of us is in shape to play since all we do is sit all day and play with our laptops. The last time I played basketball was in August and I played thru my PS2 not the real physical basketball. We went to Decalantiaw where the basketball game would be held along with the other personnel here in the airport. We would play against the Air Force team that’s also near the compound. On the shoot around the game of basketball became a picture taking session since our star player Emman is doing poses. When the game started we spent the first quarter on the bench. I went in the middle of the 2nd quarter and after just two laps of running up and down. My lungs are burning already. The 3rd quarter started with us playing me and Mario and we had a fun time. I got out after the third and my legs fill stiff after all the running. We ended up winning the game since the Air Force is undermanned, but a win is still a win.

Continuation of my Coron Adventures
These events happened after I uploaded my blog in one of the internet stations here in Coron. Contrary to the belief of some and mine before, Coron has broadband internet connection and its cheaper unlike in Boracay. After we were done checking our facebook and uploading pictures, we ate dinner at Food Trip were they served the best beef teriyaki with buttered vegetables. It’s also the first time after our 5days here that we were able to watch news on TV. We usually listen to the news on the HF radio we used during the duty hours to communicate with Manila.
We then proceeded to Kawayanan Grill, the place is located near Allied Bank. On our way we stopped by the plaza to watch a game of 3 on 3 basketball. When we got there at Kawayanan since we already ate we just settled into one of the huts and ordered beer. San Mig Premium for me and San Mig Light for Mario. The beer cost 50 per bottle of SML and 65 for the Premium. There are a lot of tourist who eat at the place since the ambiance during the night is relaxing along with the choice of music.
We retired to our room at exactly 11pm. In time for us to wake up at 6am to be able to catch the Zest Air service back to the airport. The next morning we woke exactly on the dot at 6:00am. We quickly grab our things and walked to the Zest Air office which by the time we got there is still close. Incidentally in front of the Zest Air office is the 2go branch I was looking for to send the Globe Tattoo back to my girlfriend. We waited for almost 45 minutes there but the service never showed up so we were forced to take a van from the market. It would be 150 pesos out of our pocket instead of the free ride from the Zest Air service.
The travel took about 45 minutes to the airport along with other passengers. When we got to the airport, Emman was also on his way to Coron waiting for the buhay buhay truck that he would hitch on. We had a quick shower and went to work after until the afternoon. When we signed off we decided to go jogging but I was too lazy to so I decided to take a short nap while Mario did his laundry. I woke up around 6:30pm and we had dinner or papaya and tuna stir fried. After dinner it was my turn to do the dishes and also do my laundry. It took me a long time to finish the laundry since I don’t do my laundry in Manila before. After I concluded the washing my back was in knots and aching like hell. I decided to retire to bed. This concludes the Coron Adventures Part 2 stay tuned for the next adventure.

Coron Adventures Take 2
I'm accessing this blog today in the town of Coron. We had a little R&R and we decided to stay here for the night. When we left the office we just plan to go to Landbank to open an ATM account here to save from the bank charges. We waited for almost two hours while we wait for our ATM card. Since we've been waiting for so long we just discussed spending the night here and see the sights which we were unable to see the last time.
We decided impromptu we didn't even brought any change of clothes. So, we proceeded to the market to buy a face towel, shorts and a shirt. we also went to the souvenir shop here since i bought my girlfriend belle something that she wants, a pearl necklace. We also look for a room to spend the night in and we found an air-conditioned one for 600 a night but sadly it is full. So, we settled to the 350 a night room with just a fan and two beds. We went to hire a tricycle for our trip to Maquinitan where the hot spring is located. A note to all travelers do always ask some local how much usually is the going rate before you try to negotiate a ride. We hired a tricycle for 300 pesos which is the going rate here in Coron to the hot springs. The driver would wait for you there while you go inside and take a dip in the springs. The entrance to the springs is 100 pesos.
When we got there the technique they say in staying longer in the spring is for you to immerse yourself slowly in the pool. i really enjoyed sitting on the little waterfall while the hot water is streaming down your back. We took a couple of snaps of the place and got to dipping in the pool. The only downside of a hot spring from a swimming pool is you're perspiring when you get out of the pool. but all in all it was a fun and adventurous day. The cleansing is a plus since the warm water opens all your pores you could flush out all the dirt in your body. The Coron adventure hasn't been concluded yet as i write this blog. But i will update you on the next blog.

The Day After
Another day is done in Busuanga. As I am writing this blog we have just finished having dinner. Tonight’s menu was corned tuna and beef loaf. We don’t have any food left on the fridge because we weren’t able to go to town to do the groceries. Mineral water has run out also. But all in all it was a good day besides that. We also just finished watching Wolverine while we were eating dinner.
Manila VFR was suspended today so it was a day of rest for us. Not much planes to talk to and control besides the usual 4 scheduled flights. We are getting the hang of things now and we tried playing the PS2 I took with me here. But to our dismay we weren’t able to since the audio and video connection of the TV is broken. It has been hotwired to the DVD already and it means hotwiring my PS2 also in order for us to use it. Emman is still nowhere to be heard from; our last report of him was he would be here on Saturday.
We tried to go to the waterfalls nearby after work but decided against it when the water was too cold to take a dip. Today we experience our first power outage and which cause the radios to flicker because of the back-up batteries weren’t charged. It gave us the excuse to close the airport earlier than 5pm. But the outage just lasted for an hour. We were just relieve it did because we can’t imagine sleeping in the cab without aircon. It was a choice of sleeping downstairs with plenty of mosquitoes or here with the aircon out. After work we just took a short walk around the terminal and played basketball at the old terminal. The ring was so small for the ball that we were using but we still worked up a sweat along with Mario, Sir Tony and Rex, another ATP assigned here.
After the game we retreated to the confines of the cab and I settled into a corner in continue to read the book that I’m reading. Mario and I were planning on buying a new board and ring for us to play on this Saturday when we go to Coron for our first visit. I’ll be sure to find an internet cafĂ© with a decent connection so that I could upload the pics I have taken here. It’s time to get some rest now for tomorrow would be another working day. Belle was telling me that I settled to the provincial life. It’s just that you got nothing to do here after 8pm. I have a choice between my book and this blog I’m writing every night to keep me sane or there is better alternative smoke.
